What is a Screensaver?
A screensaver comes on after so many minutes of inactivity to save the life of
your monitor screen. It differs from computer wallpaper, in that it usually has
moving images to prevent burn-in, while wallpaper is one picture set to create a
mood on your Desktop that you see while using your computer.. A screensaver is a type of computer program originally made to save your monitor
screen from burn-in, by coming on automatically after a programmed set of time,
that prevented images, text, document screens open, or graphics from burning-in
a ghost-like image on to your computer monitor, by blanking the screen or
filling it with moving images or patterns when the computer is on but not in
use; thus calling it a "screen saver." |
Burn-in could be prevented by shifting the position of the display contents
every few seconds, or by having a number of different images that are changed
regularly. However, too much use of a screensaver, like allowing the fluorescent
backlight to remain lit all the time instead of powering down the screen, can
reduce the life of the display. Screensavers today are mostly for decorative use
or entertainment while being inactive with the computer short periods of time.
Many screensavers can also be configured to activate a useful background task,
such as a virus scan, or option for password protection before permitting the
user to resume work. This is convenient because these applications use resources
only when the computer would be otherwise idle.
