Suggested Acrylic Paint Supplies

From the Studio Desk of:
Ruth Collis
After doing some checking around, I have found that
the paints I use direct from the Nova Color Manufacturer in Los Angeles,
California, are still the better deal and quality for your money's worth, even
ordering paints individually to make this basic set of colors below, that you
will find in most stores.
You will find that to buy several tubes of acrylic
paint that cost $7-$9 dollars each, will add up to $42-$54, if bought
individually. If you buy in the sets, they are cheaper, but the colors are not
as accurate, and they will leave out a black at times. What I mean by
inaccurate, is that the Liquitex $15 set red will be more orange in color, and
too brightly fluorescent, and not give a true "color wheel standard" red. The
yellow will be too dark, and you only get 2 ounces of these paints.
The best Liquitex color set that has the more
correct, brilliant red shade and bright standard yellow, and white and black
included, is about $42, which is still pricey, and about the same as if you
bought them individually.
At Nova Color, their starting size is 4 ounces, not
2, and you get double the paint for the price. It comes straight from the
manufacturer. The only plus to getting paint from Michael's or your local craft
store, is that you get it right away. Even is you wait for their 40% off coupon
to be emailed you (if you sign up at their site for their discounts), you will
still get half the paint with 2 ounces. The best deal and double the paint size
at 4 ounces, is outlined in this chart I made for Nova Color here.

*120 Yellow Green is a really great addition for
green plants and using many green hues for foliage.
This picture is a sample of 4 ounces versus 2
ounces of paint.

If you like to
add texture or thicker impasto work to a painting, Gel Medium mixed with your
paints will get you those results. You can butter it on the canvas with a
palette knife, or use as a glue to adhere your printed template designs to a
thicker canvas panel, with no paint mixed in, and it will dry clear. Or mix
paint in, and add seashells or other fun small objects, and the binder in this
gel medium will make your fun small objects stick.
Some Examples of impasto work:

Uses.
BUT if you want to get the most for your
money, check out the size and price comparisons below. For the convenience of
your local craft store, you can get a small amount right away at a way high
price of $12.99 for 8 ounces worth, and may be your chance to see how using this
thicker paint will work for you, if just starting out.
But look to the right at Nova Color's size:
32 whole ounces for less than what you'd find in the store. That's a QUART,
which means you could fit FOUR of those
craft store 8 ounce gels into Nova Color's big 32 ounce. That means you'd pay
four times the price for not buying in bulk. That's $51.96 before tax, for 4
eight-ouncer's, for what you could get straight at the Nova Color Manufacturer
for $11.25. If you want your buck to go farther, buy from
Nova Color.
*These exact prices are reflected as of this date:
July 29, 2009. Even as prices go up or change, you will still always see the
cost-savings for the quantity that Nova Color gives you.

Here are the different sizes of Nova Color. You
could really get serious with some mural painting, and if you buy in bulk
quantity, you will save all the more.

My 2 cents worth, and findings. Let my legwork do
your deciding.
